Live, rare and previously unreleased material will accompany the remastered set, as well as reinterpretations of the album’s classic tracks from the likes of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins, Billy Talent, Alice in Chains and more. Some insight about 2112‘s legacy: The epic 2112 album which guitarist Alex Lifeson described as “the first record where we sounded like Rush,” is widely regarded as a crucial landmark in Rush’s body of work. Although it was the band’s fourth album, it’s generally considered to be the one on which the band’s epic sound and ambitious conceptual approach blossomed. Resisting record-company pressure to focus on shorter, more radio-friendly songs, the band stuck to its guns and constructed the album’s seminal seven-part, 20-minute title piece, a conceptual suite set in a dystopian future. You may recall that Grohl, Hawkins and producer/musician Nick Raskulinecz helped induct Rush to the Rock and Roll Hall of FAme in 2013 with a faithful take on Overture: So it’s perfect, then, for them to also release a recorded version of the cover with the new 40th anniversary set. Got this one just before going to Montreal to see Rush on their R40 tour in June 2015. Having not heard this album in its entirety before, I was totally sold on the mesmerizing star hologram from the moment this reissue was first announced, so I jumped on the chance - and hey, what could a 'true Rush fan' ever be if they haven't listened to 2112 before? The album, of course, is brilliant, the star hologram is perfectly hypnotic, and the DMM cutting by Sean Magee has almost all of the right ingredients for a great vinyl remaster - it's nice and detailed with a spacious soundstage and a crystalline upper end.but there's just one problem I have with it: the EQ places just a bit too much emphasis on the bright end for my tastes. I mean, every other aspect of the mastering is perfectly in balance, and the acoustic guitars found on some of the tracks on side 2 (particularly on 'Lessons', one of my favourites here) retain their beautiful, melodic qualities with a pleasing degree of sparkle. But perhaps Sean went a bit too far by making everything else sound overly sparkly. It definitely takes away from what is otherwise a very good remaster by kind of offsetting the 'meatiness' that defines the sound of a band like Rush.
